Executive Director, Washington Library Association (WA/Remote)

Job Duties (not comprehensive, other duties as appropriate)
  • Lead and support association membership in the development and implementation of policies and procedures that further the mission and strategic goals of WLA
  • Serve as spokesperson for the association in coordination with the board president
  • Work with the association leaders to identify, create, and implement strategic plans that represent the interests of WLA
  • Form strong partnerships with other library-related organizations in Washington and beyond, and with organizations interested in supporting libraries, literacy, and access to information
  • Maintain effective internal and external communications to assure an informed membership, attract potential members, engage the media, and inform the Washington legislature and other relevant groups about WLA
  • Attend periodic library-related events
  • Oversee staff activities, including coordination of annual WLA Conference
  • Work with the Advocacy and Legislative Committees to supervise the work of the association’s lobbyist and complete the annual evaluation of lobbying services
  • Coordinate organizational statements, press releases, and letters of support on behalf of WLA
  • Assist in the preparation and execution of annual WA Library Legislative Day activities, in-person and virtually
  • Lead fundraising and grant projects in coordination with the WLA office and board
  • Research and stay informed of public and private grant and funding opportunities
  • Maintain and grow strategic relationships with individuals and organizations
  • Develop competitive grant and funding proposals, including budgets and timelines
  • Collaborate on key messaging and marketing strategies
  • Create grant narratives using effective storytelling and relevant data
  • Maintain systems for grant project organization
  • Work with association bookkeeper and board treasurer on monthly finances, investment accounts, and annual budget
  • Oversee and approve all accounts payable and receivable
  • Ensure all state and federal registrations required by 501(c)(3) organizations are current
  • Administer contracts and other agreements as approved by the WLA board
  • Serve as an ex officio, non-voting member of the WLA Executive Board, assure that meeting logistics and materials are arranged and announced, and assist the president in developing meeting agendas
  • Orient new Board members, committee chairs, and member group leaders each year; assist in identifying candidates to run for office and to serve on committees; participate in cultivating new leaders
  • Lead the WLA Board in identifying organizational goals and objectives for strategic planning
  • Increase membership through an organized plan of recruitment and retention activities
  • Assist in maintaining an accurate membership database
