Learn & Teach: Coding with Microsoft TouchDevelop Curriculum for Your Library
Register for Free!

In just over an hour, using free, simple tools, you can learn all you need to know to host a coding program at your library. Take a day, and you’ll learn enough to create a coding culture.

Education is shifting to prepare kids for the future job market, and code literacy is just as essential to this generation as math, science, and languages.  Coding encourages creative thinking, motivates problem solving, and builds confidence and perseverance in the face of challenges.  Not only does coding build competency, but it also provides useful crossover skills in other disciplines outside computer science and programming.  And like solving any interesting puzzle, coding can be totally fun!

Using the Microsoft Imagine coding kit and the Microsoft TouchDevelop platform, we’ll guide you, train-the-trainer style, through several simple tutorials that can be used in your library to teach coding – from the very basics to more advanced skills.  The curriculum we’ll share is fully built and scalable, so you and your coders can decide how deep you want to dive. Whether your goal is to host hour-long standalone programs on coding, day-long – or even multi-day “camps,”  Microsoft has developed materials can be used ‘out of the box’ – with very little experience or preparation needed by library staff. Facilitated by Angela Carlson, Microsoft and Elizabeth Iaukea, Washington State Library

Workshop Outcomes
Library staff will understand what coding is and why it’s important as a 21st century digital literacy
Library staff will feel confident in their ability to use the tools provided to teach a coding class or start a coding camp.
Library staff will connect with staff from other libraries to share plans and prior experiences with hosting coding events at their libraries
